Teaching In Movies Assignment
Clip One: School of Rock Leadership Scene

I chose this clip because it is a great example of how an encouraging teacher can make the learning experience better for students. The context behind this scene is that the “teacher” (played by Jack Black) is not actually a teacher nor a proper substitute, but a musician desperate to find a job. I think what can be taken away from this is that everyone can, in some capacity, be a teacher despite their qualifications or lack thereof. I think this clip is a good example of teaching because the teacher makes sure no student is left behind and gives them each a specialized learning experience all while being encouraging to the students.
Clip Two: Karate Kid Coat Scene

I chose this clip because it displays a good example of patient teaching, however unconventional it may seem. The context behind the clip is that Mr. Han (played by Jackie Chan) uses every-day motions to teach Dre (played by Jaden Smith) discipline and hone his muscle memory. What I think we can take from the clip is that students when think they are failing to learn anything, teachers must be patient and explain what the student is being taught to prevent frustration, and subsequently, burnout. I think this clip offers an example of decent teaching, because while Mr. Han is patient with teaching Dre an important skill, he refuses to explain to what end, leaving Dre frustrated and less eager about learning.
