Body Mapping Reflection
I had already been aware of the fact that how my posture affects my playing, as my violin professor made sure that was the first thing we worked on. Even until now, when playing, I have to reposition myself, so I am standing straight and my feet are both together and pointing forward. Though I have been made aware multiple times, I still have trouble kicking the habit of locking my pinky and wrist on the bow hand and forgetting to move my whole arm when shifting from position to position on the violin. Not only that, but when playing I tend to forget to breathe and stand up straight, which only makes my playing worse and stresses me out more, causing my playing to fall apart. Not all is lost, however. My professor has made me aware that learning scales is an important part to playing violin, as it helps you to create a mental map of where each and every note is in each position, so passages like the William Tell Overture, which forces you to start in 4th position and constantly shift, are not as intimidating to learn and overcome. Getting to that point is still a long way for me as I still have a lot to learn on violin and on proper posture when playing the violin. Knowing more about body mapping now is going to help my playing because of how much it has added to my awareness of how I should set myself up before playing.
